PERFORMANCE

Theatre performance Odilo. Obscuration. Oratorio. Premiered in the insecure time just before the potential outbreak of the new world clash. The geostrategic and geopolitical interests, new rising of nationalisms and racisms. The news scarily similar to those our ancestors faced before and during World War II. Odilo Globočnik is a dark image of the Slovenian history. He is that Slovenian who occupied the highest ranks in the hierarchy of the German Nazi system. The Slovenian who addressed the crowd at one of the notorious Nuremberg Nazi party rallies. The Slovenian who executed operation Reinhard and was responsible for the death of millions. The Slovenian who invented extermination concentration camp. The Slovenian who managed Risiera concentration camp.

The coproduction of Mladinsko and Kino Šiška, based on the textual masses by Peter Mlakar and Dragan Živadinov, is fully conscious of the dangers of the time in which we live, as we are witnessing a new rise of nationalism and racism. The key elements of the project are thus a clear anti-Nazi stand, the killing of Globočnik’s name, and the obstruction of the resurrection of his acts. The performance methodologically refuses to understand his acts and National Socialism as something normal. Even more, by using the ritual of killing his name it wants to, once and for all, be done with Odilo Globočnik, as well as the Nazism and fascism, and prevent their return and rise. Within this frame of the ritual killing, the performance stages the awareness of personalised evil while refusing to enter the theatre identification model. National Socialism is the greatest realism in the history of humankind!

DIRECTOR/COMPANY

The Mladinsko Theatre – Slovensko mladinsko gledališče – was established in 1955 as the first professional theatre for children and youth in Slovenia. In the first twenty-five years it created for them. But it never underestimated its young audience. Since the very beginning it has tackled heavy topics, like the Holocaust, coming of age, love in the rimes of revolution … And then around 1980 it took a new step and deliberately expanded its programme, in which it linked – in which it continues to link – political criticism and provocativeness with innovative performative procedures and fresh poetics, to attract the audiences of all ages. Such stance contributed to its becoming one of the factors in the democratisation of the then federal republic. Both lines, the socio-critical perspective and the research position, remain the characteristics of its programme even today. At least since the early 1980s, the Mladinsko has been embedded into the theatre landscape of Europe, and since the 90s also South America and other continents. It is a theatre organism in a constant flow. In over forty countries around the world, our versatile ensemble, capable of extraordinary transformations has left indelible impression, as it is full of actors who can tackle music, choreography or psychological challenge and do not abide to a hierarchy or a star system but support each other to be a fine-tuned whole. Mladinsko observes the society critically, comments on it and strives to shape it. It has been – it is – a theatre organism that tries to penetrate – that penetrates – into the public space from the stage, so that for us, the public space becomes an equal space for performance.

Dragan Živadinov is a director, an attractor and the founder of the retro-garde process in theatre, a co-founder of the Neue Slowenische Kunst movement, a co-founder of Cultural Centre of European Space Technologies (KSEVT), a post-gravity artist and a candidate cosmonaut. While Živadinov has always been interested in total theatre guided by abstract art, his third, post-gravitational phase of art focuses on the cosmos as a real space of (theatre) art and strives to realise in it the first truly abstract theatre piece of art.
