NAME OF THE WORKSHOP: THE MOVE - CREATING A CHARACTER WITH PHYSICAL THEATER

TEACHER: MONIQUE MASIUS

SHORT BIO:

She studied Theater- and Film at the University in the Netherlands, worked for various theater companies and organizations and ended up working in management positions for various cultural and non-cultural institutions and organizations in the Netherlands, Germany and in countries such as Finland, Italy, Czech Republic and Poland. In these years, Dance remained part of her life, and she implemented her working experience as a (marketing) manager in workshops for the cultural field. She worked e.g. with wonderful choreographers on how they could communicate their personal ‘branding’ and she developed her own, by teaching both commercial Latin Fitness classes and theater movement classes at the same time.

Physical Theater came into her life in 2002, when she was coaching acting students to use non-verbal expression methods when creating characters. She is impressed by the works of DV8, an English physical theater company and got influenced by the works of Rudolf von Laban and his dedication of creating a very structured movement-approach for actors.

Today she teach young Turkish talented people at Tiyatrohane, a theater academy in Izmir. This experience has enriched her experience as a Physical Theater trainer and enabled her to develop a method for teaching Physical Theater.

DESCRIPTION OF THE WORKSHOP:

DESCRIPTION OF THE WORKSHOP:

This workshop is based on Feldenkrais method’s basic principles on body awareness and the basic knowledge of neurosensory processes. The aim is to seek for the answers to questions; What is emotion? Do they really exist? How are they created or expressed throughout body and voice? Emotions or Feelings? Body is, as a whole, a miraculous creation, that every part is interconnected. So in this workshop, we’ll be talking about this connection; the effects of the nervous system, to body expression, muscles, speech, voice and breath. While creating a character, these connections will be leading the actor to a much more natural acting.

PURPOSE:

Text is a good helper for an actor. It is a key to build up the subtext and the characteristics. When the character’s structure (physically and psychologically) and emotions are only based on the text, not on the breath, voice changes, senses, natural reflexes or body expressions, make sure something is missing. Every character has her/his stream of mind. And that is what causes the natural reflexes. So we’ll be working on;
- Natural expression and reflexes. The response of the nervous system and neurosensory reflexes on both the actor itself and the character he/she wears.
- We will be working on theater pieces with and without text. To avoid textual limitation and to search beyond the text.
Theoretically (anatomical knowledge) and practically (exercises) studies will be held.

DESCRIPTION OF THE WORKSHOP:

During this master class, I'd like to share the experience I gathered on my path. I am a member of the Mladinsko Theatre, a contemporary, socially engaged centre, but I’ve also had the privilege of working on many independent and other productions. I feel the stars were kind to me, as in that period, the 80s and the 90s, the theatre scene, especially the independent one, was bursting with new ideas and productions, as well in Ljubljana as elsewhere in the now ex-, but then still very much our common country Yugoslavia.

After its disintegration, I started working also in the EU productions. As a study case, I'd like to present the first one: Sarajevo (score by Vlatko Stefanovski, text by Goran Stefanovski, conceived by Haris Pašović, directed by Slobodan Unkovski). The rehearsals took place in Antwerp, the '93 cultural capital of Europe, and the play was premiered as the opening production of the post-fire restored Bourla Theatre. After that, I took part in other European projects, in which collaborators from all over met.

PURPOSE:

Today, the culture is faced with great disfavour and, consequentially, lower funding and worse conditions. However, if there's a will, there's a way, and no, we won't be silenced! It's in the unbearable conditions that the creativity soars, that new forms and new spaces are being discovered – things that would never come from comfort zones. New connections, collaborations, manifestos are being born, saving the culture and creativity, because Art is a basic human need.
